Hand washing is a very important part of health care. Many diseases can be avoided when one’s hands are clean, especially after using the toilet, and before eating.
One area that really needs hand washing stations is in pre-schools (Anganwadis) in India. These schools often operate outdoors, and have to store all of their supplies in a closet overnight.
We looked at how to make a simple hand wash station for young, short people (3-5 years old), and make it simple and easy to store in a compact way overnight in the closet.
We created a simple stand (shown in the photos in white), that holds a bucket above a large basin.
The teacher can fill the upper bucket, and then many children can wash their hands at once.
After everyone has washed their hands and the pink basin has been emptied, the white stand can be placed upside down in the pink basin, and the blue bucket goes inside both of those. Thus the whole hand wash station can be stored away easily.
Hand washing is really fun for young people!
